Hands Across Time (HAT)

Hands Across Time (HAT) goal is to provide opportunities for Girl Scouts and senior citizens to develop relationships and have fun.  We do this by getting together several times within the year with the same group of seniors.

Come join us in some fun with local senior citizens again this year!  Activities in the past have included:  BINGO, caroling, game (card or board) night, Valentine Card Making, beach party, Luau, Spooktacular/Costume Parade (w/trick or treating TO the seniors!), puzzlers, May baskets, tea party, tribute to America (9/11), crafts … Traditionally, near the end of the scheduled event (last 10-15 minutes), we serve refreshments and just chat with the residents.

These events take place at the Ridge Drive/Senior Apartment buildings on Hwy 241 in St. Michael next to Highland Bank.  There are two buildings (696 & 698 Ridge Drive), each with a Community Room. These rooms are equipped with small kitchens (stove/oven, refrigerator and sink) that we can use, if we wish, during our events there.  We plan activities in BOTH buildings on the scheduled night.  We typically have 5-8 residents attending per building.  Due to limited space, we often have to limit registration to 12-15 girls per building.

Each building also has its own BINGO game set. When playing BINGO, we typically bring prizes for both the Residents and the girls – for the Residents, anything disposable/usable (paper products, soap, toilet paper, greeting cards, candles, individual packets/single serve food/beverages, etc.)

Any fee will usually be minimal (ie, $5 per troop or up to $2 per girl, depending upon the activity). Sometimes there will be no fee and you may just be asked to bring the refreshments. Checks are to be written out to CRSU.

These are truly a fun & rewarding activities.  The residents look forward to seeing the girls! It’s great getting to know these special people and then seeing some of them out and about in the community!

To Participate:  Contact Karen Barthel by email at tkbarthel@embarqmail.com or by phone at 763-497-2987.  You may complete the Event Registration Form and email or provide that information in an email.

Location & Directions: Ridge Drive Apartments (696 & 698 Ridge Drive), right next to Highland Bank in St. Michael (on the south side of Hwy 241 as you head east to I-94). Take Hwy 241 East through St. Michael. At the stop light at Edgewood, turn right. Take the first left/Thielen Drive and turn in the bank parking lot. Park along the right, facing the Building. This is what I refer to as Building 1 (698 Ridge Drive). The door you see will take you right into the Community Room.  You may also park in the back/visitor parking section of the parking lot which is right off Ridge Drive. Take the second left off of Edgewood and go almost a block. The parking lot will be on your left. Enter either building. If entering 698 Ridge Drive, head to the main hallway (center of the building) and walk almost to the other end of the building. The Community Room is on the right. If entering 696 Ridge Drive, head to the main hallway (center of the building) and walk half way to the other end of the building. The Community Room is on the right.

Leaders, would your troop like to host an event? The events are open to all troops in the Service Unit, however, one or two troops can act as the activity hosts.  Or, your troop can host an activity on a night that works for your troop and the residents. You select the theme/activity and build the fun!  I will facilitate getting the event on the calendar, and can help you with ideas, suggestions, and guidelines.

If you are interested in hosting an event, here’s what you do:

· Call me to find a date and we’ll get it on the seniors’ calendar

· Have your girls brainstorm for ideas/have fun planning

Here’s what I will/can do:

· Coordinate the date with the Caretakers

· Post the flyers (either you can create & e-mail to me, or provide the details and I will create)

· Help with guidelines on the number of participants

· Help divide the participating troops between the buildings (if hosting a ‘service unit’ event)

· If I’m available/if you want, I can meet you there to help with set up or get you started.

Current calendar of events:

· Spooktacular – October 25th  (6:30-7:45 PM)

· Bingo – November 28th, March 26th   (6:30-7:30 PM)
