Leadership Essentials

Your most important tool will be the Journey books. These colorful, grade-appropriate books lead girls through Girl Scouting with fun, interactive activities. Each program grade level is also supplemented with an adult guidebook to help leaders navigate their troop through the Journeys.

Give ALL your activities the GSLE Test—Ask Yourself?

1. What Key or Keys are the girls going to experience?

· Discover...Will they discover a strong sense of self, their values and use their knowledge and skills to explore their world?

· Connect...Will the girls care about, inspire and team with others locally and/or globally?

· Take Action...Will the girls act to make the world a better place?

2. What Processes will be followed?

· Girl Led...Will the girls be planning the activity, making choices and brainstorming what will be happening?

· Cooperative learning… Will the girls be working together at each step to plan the activity/event?

· Learning-by-Doing… Will they have hand’s-on experience or will it just be demonstration by an adult?

Be intentional about the outcomes. What is the benefit to the girls in planning and executing this activity or event?

REFLECT!!! Make sure the girls have a chance to discuss and analyze what they have done so they are clear about how they have benefited from the experience.
